Welcome to Semporna Islands Project

Semporna’s coral reefs are a unique marvel, renowned for their remarkable biodiversity. They support marine life, sustain coastal communities—and beyond—with food and livelihoods, including tourism, and enable scientific research. Caring for these reefs is essential for the well-being of both nature and people. Unfortunately, the reefs of Semporna continue to suffer from overfishing, destructive fishing, coastal development and pollution, with climate change an escalating threat.

Where We Work

Tun Sakaran Marine Park (Semporna, Sabah) and beyond

Our focus is on coral reefs and islands off the southeast coast of Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. This includes but is not limited to, Tun Sakaran Marine Park, the first marine protected area in Malaysia where local communities live within park boundaries, use the resources and own some of the land.

How We Work

Our primary objective is to safeguard the exceptional natural characteristics and diverse life within this region while fostering sustainable resource use, economic growth, and preservation of traditional culture.

Technical Innovations

We embrace cutting-edge technologies to revolutionise how we monitor, collect data and intervene in ocean-related issues.

Community Engagement

We collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to raise awareness and cultivate a sense of collective responsibility for ocean protection.

Sustainable Livelihoods

We aim to create economic opportunities that are in line with responsible and environmentally friendly practices through our work.
